The school drop out rate is high.
There are issues about anti social elements. Government should
give this issue utmost importance. Employment opportunities should
be developed so that youths do not go into a bad direction.
Brief About Tiruvannamalai District
1. About District
Tiruvannamalai District came into existence on 30th September
1989 after the bifurcation of the erstwhile North Arcot District.
The District lies between 11.55° and 13.15° North latitude and
78° 20' to 79° 50' East longitude. The district is bounded on
the north and west by Vellore District, on the southwest by Krishnagiri
District, on the south by Villupuram District and on the east
by Kanchipuram District.
2. TOTAL AREA
The Total Geographical Area of the District is
6191 Sq Kms, comprising the Revenue Divisions of Tiruvannamalai
and Cheyyar. The district has six taluks viz. Tiruvannamalai,
Chengam, Polur, Arni, Cheyyar and Vandavasi. There are 18 Blocks,
including one tribal Block, Javvadhu Hills constituting
the district under Rural sector and four Municipalities viz. Tiruvannamalai,
Arni, Cheyyar (Thiruvathipuram), Vandavasi representing urban
sectors along with Polur selection grade Town Panchayat.
3. BOUNDARIES
The district is bounded on the North and West
by Vellore district and on the South West by Krishnagiri district
on the South Villupuram district and on the East by Kanchipuram
district.
4. FOREST AND HILLS
One sixth of the area of this district is Covered
by reserve forest and hills which is part and parcel of Eastern
Ghats under Javvadhu Hills. The important hills in this district
are Tiruvannamalai (2668 ft 79.80 MSL), Javvadhu hills (2500
ft MSL) and Kailasagiri (2743 ft MSL).
5. SOIL
The red loamy soil is predominantly found here.
However Polur taluk has concentration of red series loam. The
district has also different types of soils such as ferrogenous
loamy and sandy loamy however black series loam is found in tanks
and river beds of Cheyyar and Vandavasi taluks.
6. CLIMATE AND RAINFALL
The general climate is tropical. The district
receives rainfall from North East and South West monsoons. The
total rainfall during 2002-2003 in this district was 1028.7 mm.
7. POPULATION
The total population of this district 21,81,853
comprising of 10,93,191 Men and 10,88,662 women as per 2001 census(Provisional
figure). The urban population is 4,00,549 constituting 18 % of
the total Population, the remaining 82% ie.17,81,304 is rural
population. The density of the population is 352 per sq.km. The
SC&ST population is (not available). The total literate among
male are 7,73,367 and that of female are 5,44,284.
8. RIVER
There is no perennial river in the district.
Cheyyar, Thenpennai, Kamandala Naganathi are only seasonal. SATHANUR
DAM is constructed across Thenpennai river in Chengam taluk among
Chennakesava Hills.
9. CROPPING PATTERN
Paddy, Groundnut, Sugarcane, Millets and pulses
are the major crops. During the current fasli 1413, 0.438 L/Hect
of paddy, 0.12 L/Hect of sugarcane, 0.312 L/Hect of groundnut,
0.11 L/Hect of pulses are cultivated.
10. TRANSPORT AND COMMUNICATION
93 Km of meter gauge rail transport in the Katpadi
and Villupuram segment are utilised for both passenger and goods
transportation as far as road transport nearly,1600 km of various
kinds of roads are used. The district has two head post offices,
73 Sub Post Offices, 444 branch Post Offices besides one Telegraphic
Office, 2 Telephone divisions and nearly 56643 phone connections.
11. ANIMAL HUSBANDRY
The district is the leader in white and brown
revolution among the districts in Tamil Nadu. Two milk chilling
plants are in operation at Tiruvannamalai and Anakkavoor, providing
approximately 2.03 L/Lit per day , in both flush and lean season.
12. INDUSTRIES
This district is industrially backward. The SLS
cotton spinning mill is the only major industry and in Annakkavoor
and Polur, sugar mills are functioning. However medium and
small scale industries as well as cottage industries, such as
modern rice mills, weaving factories, cotton , silk and mat weaving,
coire manufacturing and beedi manufacturing are flourishing here.
The district is enriched in mineral deposits such as black granites,
multi-coloured granites, soap and magnesite deposits.
13. BANKING
To create the financial need a network of 141
commercial bank branches, 1 District central co-op banks, 157
primary Agri.Co-operative banks, 8 LDB and one branch of TNIIC
are operated here.
14. PLACES OF WORSHIP AND TOURIST PLACES
Tiruvannamalai is one of the most venerated places
in Tamil Nadu . The main Deepam festival attracts devotees from
far and wide throughout South India. It has historic places besides
Tiruvannamalai, Arni, Vandavasi, Devigapuram connected to East
India and French companies. It has a few well maintained tourist
places such as Sathanur dam, Amirthy game park.
In the late Chola period this district was ruled
by the Cholan of Sambuvarayar having Padavedu near Arni as HQ.
We can now find the fort and note along with a Shiva temple namely
Kailasanathar in Arni town. On the whole Tiruvannamalai is traditionally
rich in Historic and spiritual values but lacks in industrial
growth.
