Jaunpur was of great importance during medieval
times. It was founded in the 14th century by Feroz Shah Tuglaq
to perpetuate the memory of his cousin Sultan Mohammad whose real
name was Jauna. Later, around 1394 AD, it became the centre of
the independent Sharquie kingdom of Jaunpur founded by Malik Sarvar.
They were great patrons of art and architecture and constructed
many fine tombs, mosques and madarsas. These have a distinctive
style which bear influences of later Tughlaq architecture. Jaunpur
was also an important centre of Islamic studies. While its architectural
heritage speaks of its illustrious past, the city is known today
for its Jasmine oil, tobacco leaves, raddish and imarti, a sweetmeat.
District Jaunpur is situated at the bank of gomati
river on National High Way No. 56 at a distance of 60 Km from
Holy City Varanasi, about 106 Km from Allahabad and 227 Km from
the capital Lucknow. It is famous for its historical importance
and is founded by famous Mughal Emperor Sher Shah Shuri. The district
falls under eastern plain zone of Uttar Pradesh. Ghazipur and
Azamgarh surround it in east, Pratapgarh and Allahabad in west,
Sultanpur in north and Mirzapur, Varanasi and Sant Ravidas Nagar
in south. District lies between 25.46º north latitude and 82.44º
east longitude. The major rivers of the district are Gomati, Sai,
Basuhi, Pili, Gangi, Mamuri and Varuna. The district is a part
of Varanasi Division. The district has six sub divisions, 21 blocks,
218 nyay panchayats, 1417-gram panchayats.
