EFICOR responds to Bihar Floods

In response to the Bihar flood catastrophe EFICOR provides relief to the affected victims. Staff and volunteers are organising a community kitchen in a temporary relief camp in Manohar High School, in Saharsa.
At least 56 people are reported to have died (Source: Sitrep No.92/2008, Ministry of Home Affairs, Disaster Management Division, Government of India) and 3.0millions are displaced after the Kosi river breached its banks, changing course inundating 725 villages in North Bihar. Districts of Supaul, Araria, Saharsa, Madhepura, Purnia, and Katihar are the worst affected. The Prime Minister has declared the Bihar floods as a “National Calamity”.
The Kosi River, sometimes called the 'Sorrow of Bihar', changed its course after almost two centuries following a breach in an embankment upstream in Nepal on 18th August. The disaster began when a dam burst on the Saptakoshi River in Nepal. The Saptakoshi, which becomes the Kosi when it enters India, subsequently broke its banks in Bihar. The situation continues to be grim and worsening further due to continuous rain last week. Media reports say it is “a catastrophe” and the worst flood in 50 years. The Prime Minister has declared the floods as a “National Calamity”.
North Bihar districts of Supaul, Araria, Saharsa, Madhepura, Purnia, and Katihar are worst affected with 725 submerged villages. About 2, 74,543 hectares of land including residential and agricultural land has been marooned and 3, 11,605 cattle have been displaced due to breach in eastern Kosi afflux bund at Kushaha in neighbouring Nepal (source: State Disaster Management Department).

EFICOR’s Programme Manager Ramesh Babu attended Inter Agency Groups (IAG) Meeting held on 27th August 2008, which was attended by 25 lead NGOs and International NGOs at the behest of the State government. The Minister for Disaster management - Mr. Nitish Sharma had urged all the humanitarian agencies to quickly respond to the affected communities as the situation is alarming.

EFICOR staff were deputed to make a rapid assessment of the situation in Madhepura and Sahrassa District. As immediate relief, 1000 people housed in Manohar High School relief camp, Saharsa are being provided with food through community kitchen.

EFICOR plans to provide food through community kitchen for 2000 more people till the waters recede. Further plans are to assist 15000 families with food and non food materials in Madhepura and Saharsa Districts.

EFICOR has 40 years of experience in relief during major disasters, alleviating people from pain and loss and giving them a hope for the future and assisting them in rebuilding their lives.
